Making Sense

I've got the "your photos don't make any sense" face from people before and I guess, for a couple or so here and there, it's kinda true. But I don't always have to have a specific subject in my photo for it to make sense. Sometimes, you just have to deduce the theme of the photo itself based on the colour and atmosphere it creates.

I guess this photo sort of constitutes to the "your photos don't make any sense"-ness. What do you think? Anyways, this photo was taken on a really sunny day so I increased the shutter speed but I still wasn't able to get rid of all the glow produced by the sunlight thus there is some lost details in between the leaves. Some editing required of course.

This is a disgustingly stupid photo. I suppose you could say that this is another theme-less picture but the details are worth the look. This one's more of an appreciation of details than anything else I suppose. I honestly don't know what made me take this photo. Very harsh lighting and a slightly off-set angle...a real shit piece of work.

This is a pretty old photo and yeah, there may be a bench there but almost EVERYONE who has seen this picture can't make sense of it. To me, it exudes nostalgia what with the row of windows in the background. It kind of reminds me of my late great-grandmother's house. Anyway, the lighting on that day I remember to be pretty good thus I turned it into a B&W because of the good textures it created.

Photo Jogging

I'm "photo jogging"

In other words I'm just randomly uploading any photos I feel like uploading for the sake of uploading...

Actually this wasn't my initial intention...I just can't remember why I uploaded this particular set of photos.

But anyways....

For those of you who haven't guessed yet, this is actually a photo of the bottom bit of a violin. It's not a very intriguing photo. Looks really weird actually. Can't say much about it. Used the built-in flash due to bad light exposure.

I have about 4 different versions of this; all of which differ slightly in terms of colour warmth and clarity. Amongst the four of them I found this one to be the best not only because it made the details on the leaves of the plants more pronounced but also because it creates a secluded atmosphere.

Took this in France with a Sony Cybershot T-10. Can't remember the settings but lighting was really bad. Because this was taken in Notre Dame(Gothic architecture), there wasn't much lighting. But this gave an opportunity to experiment with lighting. Challenging I can assure you. =P

This one's taken in a place closer to home (okay...it wasn't that close but at least it was in the same country). Great lighting from a spotlight. Needed a bit of sharpening from Picasa to make it a little more impressive. Very happy with this photo in general but I'm still kicking myself over the loss of detail towards the top. Should have adjusted the aperture =S

Aha....just a photo of humour. Doesn't really mean anything. Wanted to turn it into a B&W but all it did was make the photo really flat. Texture was also poor in B&W.

Odd Perspectives

Some of my photos remind me of the poet Philip Larkin (not that I know many poets to choose from).

A very simple almost-white wash photograph which I took some time back. It's meant to be flat to give it a very monotonous feel to it. The colours against the leprous white background gives the photograph a little more depth and character.

Another of my stranger photographs. It's mainly the idea of perception and vision. Composition could be better but then again, I don't really believe in ideal arrangements. Sometimes, it gets boring.

Now back to something a little more normal. I photographed another event recently but it turned out pretty lame photos because of the angle I was photographing at. Only have a few decent ones worth looking at:

Hauling up the Past

Digging though my collection of photos I found these: Photos from more than a year ago. All of them a nature macro which is what I started off doing at the very beginning.

The Random Guesses

Yet again, I'm just taking advantage of the very good internet connection. I've actually uploaded crummy photos this round. I just thought the perspectives were pretty interesting. However, it's kinda hard to tell what they really are. Y'know what....I'll leave you to guess what they are =)

Camera in Your Face

I really hate photographing people. Honestly, they're the hardest thing to photograph. Sometimes they move too much or frown too much or COMPLAIN too much. Plus, they are never complacent which puts even more stress on your emotional tolerance. I recently did an extremely amateur potraiture shoot with the girls in my house and it amounted to only a few good photos:

This photo is really nice mainly because of the lighting. Not over-exposed. Of course there was a bit of editing involved but it was an overall good picture of a good friend.

My lunch buddy's photo came out really well against the almost-white backdrop. Not only did the background complement her character, her black hair and red lips really popped out after a little tweeking. A very satisfactory photo.

Now moving on to more challenging photos. The one other thing I find really hard to photograph is stage performances. I've been doing it for awhile now and I have to say that I've come pretty far but the lighting and unstrategic locations always pose a challenge for a noob like me. To get the photos I have to resort to desperate measures i.e. sitting on the floor in front of everyone, making a fool out of myself.

Not a bad photo this one. But it may take you time to figure out which is the main subject. That's why I placed him in the middle of the frame to draw the attention straight on to him. Dunno if it worked. You be the judge:

Another monochrome. To block off the bad lighting of course

This picture is quite dramatic especially because of the intensity of the expression on the subject's face. But I also have to lend some credit to the framing which gave the photo a more elongated and overwhelming feeling.

Of People and Nuts

I got myself Picasa 3 about a week ago and I'm starting to like it a little. Lots of features and options but lacks in certain areas. Not too much of a drawback because I could always revert back to my windows photo editor for that.

Anyways, I covered another event the other day(under very unstrategic circumstances) which involved a mock modelling competition. The event was a little too over-the-top for my taste but the lighting(though a little dodgy at times) was pretty good. With a little tweeking, I was able to level out the brightness and contrast but it was at the expense of noise. -_-"

Very blur, I know. But there wasn't much that could be done for this picture. I could have sharpened it more but that would make the noise more pronounced which would degrade the photograph. I had the ISO at 400(or was it 800? o_O)

This is a lovely photo(in my opinion anyway). Cropping it to fit the "model" was perfect because not only did it give more focus on her character and emphasise her height more it also gave the photo a more spacious and free view. It would have been better if I adjusted the aperture to a smaller degree but I'm an SLR noob and haven't really figured out how to do that on manual settings. -_-"

Well, I've had some time for macro this year. Have abandoned it for a bit now.

These two are pictures of cashew nuts in a jar (hence the somewhat "tunnel vision" effect on this one). Definitely an easy subject to shoot. I used a flash to make the photo sharper and pick up the details on the cashews(which by the way were slightly burnt around the edges). Not a very impressive photo in colour but turned out pretty good in monochrome (with a slightly off-set colour hue). Looked really flat as a Black and White photo.

Same cashews same jar; different angle. And this time without a flash. Picture is still pretty good but after turning it into a more-or-less sepia, I realised the picture had taken on a slightly reddish colour. Not really happy with it. I'm still trying to figure out how to neutralise it. Maybe I should go on Windows editor.

Right....now these aren't cashews(DUH!). They're eggs in a bird's nest. Not very happy with this photo mainly because of the focus which is a little off. The aperture was to wide and I wasn't able to focus solely on the eggs. I was thinking of turning down the saturation a bit but I haven't done that yet.

The Apparent Reality

It's been awhile hasn't it. It was just by luck this morning that when I turned on the laptop I actually managed to get a decent internet connection. However, it's not all joy and gaiety. Am half-way through trials and the photo editor I just downloaded is giving me some problems. Plus, I've scratched my lens. Oh yippee....

I actually turned this photo sepia and sharpened it but for some god-forsaken reason, it doesn't show here. I'm really pissed at it. Without the sharpening and the earthy colour, this picture is pretty bland. Has a flat texture and an almost bluish tinge

Another not-so-great picture. Should have isolated the subject a tiny bit more. The other characters in the photo are annoyingly distracting.

I like this photo but it has a rather odd hue to it. The background looks slightly greenish

I photographed this at an event using manual settings. I think I increased the ISO to 400. Satisfying results without much noise in the photo. It's okay I guess. Again, I edited this one to darken the background and highlight the subject but it has once again failed to show after uploading.
